The 'FIRSTs'

This is about some little facts we don't know, about the early days, about the first this and first that. I bet you don't know about some, and that's why the history of Nigeria, not about any other country or place, has to be re-introduced into the education system so we all can know where it all started, and possibly know where we are going. It is just a shorthand of search results, I will advise you to use the search engines incase you want to know more.
Obafemi Awolowo- He was one of the great people that fought for Nigeria's independence. He was the first Leader of Government business and Minister of Local Government and Finance as well as the first Premier of the Western region. He was also the first individual to be named Leader of the Yorubas in the modern era. A lot of first this, first that can be attributed to him. He led the first Nigerian party to write and present an election manifesto: Action Group. He established the first television station and service in Africa: Western Nigeria Television as well as the oldest newspaper: Nigerian Tribune; he implemented the first minimum wage policy by a Nigerian government at any level. He established the first university in Nigeria: The University of Ibadan, whose creation was not even recommended by the Federal Government of that time, he also erected the first skyscraper in tropical Africa: the Cocoa House, arguably the tallest in Ibadan and as well built the Liberty Stadium, the first of its kind in Africa at that time, all in Ibadan. He is believed to be the first to introduce free education and health care for children in Nigeria as well as the one who coined the name 'Naira'.
Jaja A. Wachuku- He was also one of those that fought for our freedom. He was the first African to win a gold medal, laureate in Oratory of Trinity college, Dublin, Ireland. He was the first speaker of the Nigerian house of representatives, the first Nigerian ambassador and permanent representative to the United Nations and the first Nigerian minister of foreign affairs. He was the founder of Dublin International Club and the first regional director, co-founder and original shareholder of African Continental Bank
Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti- She was also part of those who advocated for an independent Nigeria. She was activist who founded a lot of unions to support and fight for women.
M. A. Majekodunmi- Also one of the freedom fighters. He was the first republic minister for health
Festus Okotie Eboh- He was the first minister of labour and welfare. He also became the first minister of finance, and established the central bank and stock exchange.
Muhammadu Ribadu- He was the first minister of land, mines and power; land and Lagos affairs; and defence.
Major Gen. Aguiyi Ironsi- He wasn't one of the first coup plotters but emerged the first head of state and was also the first Nigerian general officer commanding(GOC) of the Nigerian Army. He held the first press conference and the first supreme military council.
Samuel Manuwa- He was no freedom fighter but he contributed greatly to the establishment of the first medical school in Nigeria: University College Hospital, Ibadan. He was the first Nigerian director of medical services and commissioner of the federal public service commission. Nathaniel King and Abimbola Awoliyi were the first male and female doctors respectively.
Virginia Etiaba- She's the first female governor: governor of Anambra state; though she didn't last than three months.
Iwe Iroyin- The first newspaper founded on the 3rd of December, 1859 by Henry Townsend. It was published bi-weekly in Yoruba and English and was sold for 120 cowries and 1 penny respectively.
Grace Alele Williams- She's the first female professor of Mathematics education and vice-chancellor in Nigeria: University of Benin.
Grace Oladunni Taylor- She's the first African to win a L' Oréal- UNESCO Award for women in science.
Olubola Babalola- The first female professor of Quantity Surveying.
Folake Solanke- The first female Nigerian to be named a Senior Advocate(SAN) and wear the silk gown as Senior Counsel. She's also the first commissioner of Western State as well as the first African and 42nd International president of Zonta International.
Fabian Udekwu- He's the first Nigerian cardiothoracic surgeon.
Adiele Afigbo- The first to recieve a doctoral degree in History from a Nigerian university.
Segun Toyin Dawodu- He started the first website on socio-political issues of Nigeria.
Wellington Jighere- He's the first Nigerian and African to win the World Scrabble Championship.
