AT FORTY

So great how time disappears, just like yesterday. That small baby is now an adult who is now seeing to her mother's needs. First, let's thank God for seeing her through to this day, bomb blasts have wiped some out while the others genocide. We praise the Lord for being there.
Who's this beautiful and blessed lady that I'm writing about? It is the 'Gateway State'. Forty years ago, February 3rd, 1976, a state: with Abeokuta being her capital, was created by the then head of state- Late General Muritala Muhammed alongside other ten states: Abuja, Bauchi, Benue, Borno, Imo, Niger, Ondo, Oyo, Plateau and Sokoto. It is bordered by Oyo and Osun to the north, Lagos to the south, and Republic of Benin and Ondo to the west and east respectively. It has a respectable and remarkable green outline; land and mineral resources in abundance. The level of peace, harmony and security is 100, though there is always going to be faults.
She also has four major daughters: Remo, Ijebu, Yewa(Egbado), Egba; she has twenty local governments. They speak Ijebu, Egba, Awori, and Egun. After creation, Lt. Col. Seidu Ayodele Balogun was installed as the first military administrator and when democracy was restored, Late Chief Olabisi Onabanjo was elected as the first civilian governor. Alhaja Salimot Makanjuola Badru was the first female deputy governor; she worked with the former governor, Otunba Gbenga Daniel. Senator Ibikunle Amosun is the present governor, Chief Yetunde Onanuga being is deputy and will be leaving office in 2019.
When it comes to excellence in education, she holds the best position; she has won the popular 'Cowbell Mathematics Competition' for five consecutive years, if not more. She is home to a number of prestigious schools that includes: Remo Secondary School, Ijebu-Ode Grammar School, Yewa College, and Abeokuta Grammar School as well as the popular Mayflower School and Iganmode Grammar School. She boasts of the highest number of tertiary institutions in the country.
She can be noted for housing a lot of things- the first cathedral, the first newpaper company, the first woman to drive a car, the first minister of finance, the first nobel laureate in Nigeria, the longest serving monarch in Nigeria, and on and on. A lot of notable people are her indigene- Chief Obafemi Awolowo, H.I.D. Awolowo,Funmilayo Ransome-Kuti, Olufela Anikulapo Kuti, Taiwo Solarin, Oba Kayode Adetona, Chief M.K.O. Abiola, Chief Olusegun Obasanjo, Wole Soyinka, Ola Rotimi, Salawa Abeni, Mike Adenuga, Professor Oluyemi Oluleke Osinbajo and so many others.
She doesn't lack when it comes to tourism. Olumo Rock and Lisabi Forest in Abeokuta, Bilikisu Sugbo Shrine in Oke-Eiri, Yemoji Natural Swimming pool in Ijebu-Ode, Orisagamu River pit in Sagamu and so many more are all the places you will want to see when you come around; not forgetting the two major rivers- Ogun and Yewa rivers. Her indigenes practice Islam, Christianity and the traditional religion.
Ogun State is the definition of tranquility. It's a place you will love. Forty years of existence, has not been so easy. The Gateway of Nigeria, I wish you unending existence in greatness and goodness. Peace and harmony forever. Happy Celebration!!!
